Roy Carter of Just Hanging, Inc. came in to transport and hang the art. It was a tricky installation! Both pieces needed to be centered, hung even and level with security hangers to ensure they would stay put for the show. Roy can be reached at 804.301.8709

I thought I would show some of the items from my vignette in detail.

This table is made by an English Furniture Company using traditioanl materials and techniques for contemporary furnishings. The base is hammered steel with a brushed nickel finish; the top is rosewood.

A Dreamy Dressing Room

This is the closet of your dreams! I took an outdated mirrored closet and transformed it into a classy and classic dressing room. The mirrors are functional yet subtle when inserted into the recessed panels of the doors. The ottoman top lifts for a conveniently located laundry basket; it is also a nice place to sit and put on your shoes!

Next week I will show you the shower!

Photographing the space was a challenge. John Magor did an outstanding job capturing the room and it's mirrors without capturing himself, me or the camera!

Contemporary Furniture in Richmond

My 5th and 6th graders loved the colors, the comforts and fun on their field trip today!

Sarah gives the girls a tour of all of the offerings at LaDiff. We looked at office furniture, lighting, dining tables, plates, counter stools, kid's bedroom furniture, lounge chairs, sofas and the recycled cardboard mounted animal heads!

The store takes it's name from the "booboo" on the elephant's toe according to Jim Strickland, the owner! The "booboo" can be seen on the elephant's foot shown here!

The history of interior furnishings is not something most people think about. We know what styles we like and what ones we don't. We know when something works in a room and when it doesn't.

I am fascinated by the variety of styles and the time periods they are from. I love how furniture has developed over time based on technology, tools, materials and history.

Last Friday I took my 5th and 6th grade students to Elephant's Toe Antiques at 5808 Grove Avenue to learn about the different periods of furniture design. Jim Strickland, the owner, gave the girl's a tour and a lesson!

Orange for the Interior

We all need a little extra Vitamin C during this cold snap! I would like to share a special recipe for one of my yummy martinis.

I have also provided a child friendly version!

Plan ahead, the vanilla sugar takes a month to make! (or borrow some of mine)

In a martini shaker with ice mix:

2 oz. Vanilla Vodka

1 oz. Orange Liqueur

2 oz. Orange Juice

Let this chill while you prepare the glass.

Dampen the rim of the glass with a bit of lemon. Dip the rim in the vanilla sugar* to coat.

Add 1 oz. of Sprite or & Up to the shaker, gently shake and pour!

*Vanilla Sugar

Fill 3/4 of a Mason Jar with sugar. Add a vanilla bean that has been split open lengthwise being careful not loose any of the vanilla granules. Place the bean in the jar and seal it tight. Shake the jar every few days until it is ready.

For those under 21 try this variation:

2 oz. Orange Juice

4 oz. of Seltzer

You can add a little Sprite or 7 Up to sweeten it a bit if you like!

Interior Design Selections

I am teaching Interior Design to a group of 5th & 6th graders at St. Catherine's School in Richmond! For our first class I gave them a chance to make fabric and color selections for a either a living room, dining room or bedroom. I have posted the designs here! Enjoy!

This living room group must have been inspired by nature! I love the combination of green, tan and ivory.

The dining room has a blend of cool greys for a very sophisticated tonal look.

The bedroom group went for cool blue with a warm chestnut and rose accent.

Garden stools have been around for ages, recently you have seen them as accent tables. They are a wonderful way to update a room and add a colorful accent. Note the many shapes!

How about a crabby cocktail table?!

Or maybe drums? These may not be so good if you have a young percussionist in the house!

SHELVING AND DISPLAY CABINETS

Display treasures in style, stack up books for easy access, add height to a corner or create a focal point with shelving.

There are some pieces for your formal dining room, another for the river (or the shore if you summer in New Jersey like me!), one for living room and one for the reading nook.

Great coffee tables and cocktails from

High Point Market--

can anyone tell me what the difference is?!

(I also included a few other tables worth noting!)

Note the rivet details and shapes.

One look is industrial, one is curvilinear and the other linear.

These would add a special look to any living room or family room.

Every now and then you need an odd look to create a surprise in the room.

The extra storage is nice with this oversized basket!

The little service bar would fit between windows or in a corner nicely.

End Tables

The steamer trunk look in stainless, leather and mock crocodile; these would make great night tables or end tables in a family room.

Many tables had metal bases with great textures or motifs.

The finishes varied from refined to aged.

There were a variety of sizes--something to fit every need.

The shapes were often amusing!

How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?!

In this case I made my client's dog very happy

with a cozy napping nook!

Here is the wide angle view of the breakfast room; that is the James River in the background. My client wanted a house that reflected a "Tommy Bahama" style! This project was fun!

An Artist's Studio

I took some photos in his studio. I decided not to photograph his art, you can see that at The Reynold's Gallery, 1514 West Main Street in Richmond! I photographed the squeezed out tubes of paint, the stained brushes and jars bursting with bright colors! His work space is as lovely as his art!

Develop a Long Range Room Plan

We have been hearing many statistics on how America is cutting back in the "down economy". A recent industry report quoted a Forbes’ survey stating that people were willing to cut back 64 to 82% of their expenses on going out to eat, entertainment outside the home, wardrobes, and vacations. According to the Forbes’ survey only 25% of Americans are willing to cut back on their cable expenses. The conclusion is that we are spending more time at home!

Safety, security and comfort are our primary needs in our homes. Creating this personal haven is a priority that may be overwhelming to conquer in our busy lives. A financial advisor recently told me that her advice right now is “buy quality and buy cautiously”. I will give you the same advice when furnishing your home. The “room of your dreams” can happen one layer at a time. You may have one immediate need to address, fill this need confidently by developing a long range plan first.

The long range plan should include a scaled floor plan as well as color and textile direction. Long range planning is a service Kathy Corbet Interiors provides.
