The Principles of design: Proportion & Scale
Why Size Matters More Than You Think
One of the most common design frustrations we hear is: “I love this piece, but it just doesn’t work in my room.”
More often than not, the issue isn’t style — it’s proportion and scale.
These two principles are the difference between a room that feels cohesive and one that feels awkward, no matter how beautiful the individual pieces may be.
Scale determines how large something should be within a space. Proportion determines how elements relate to one another.
Proportion: Art
Three equally sized paintings break up the wall instead of one large one that would overwhelm the chairs.
Proportion: Furniture Layouts
We broke this room up into thirds. The main seating area is in the front two-thirds to cozy up the seating at the fireplace. We used the back third for a built in and a little coffee corner.
Proportion: Paneling
Getting this ceiling paneling to work with the off center placement of the sky light was tricky. We surrounded the skylight with different sizes that balanced each other nicely.
Scale: Wall Accent
The oversized wall mural commands the entire corridor. It’s immersive. It transforms what could have been a simple hallway, into an experience.
Because the image spans nearly the full wall height and width, it changes how the space is perceived. A smaller piece of artwork would have felt insignificant. The large scale creates drama and energy.
Sometimes scale isn’t about blending in — it’s about making a deliberate statement.
Scale: Lighting
The light fixtures are oversized to fill the voided space between the island and vaulted ceiling.
Scale: Furniture
Large great rooms can be a challenge. Often the furniture looks sparse. We gave this large room a fabulously large seating area around the fireplace. We filled in along the windows with benches.
Proportion and scale are what allow a space to feel confident — grounded in its architecture and intentional in its choices.
